The Heidelberg song manuscript cpg 350 ( Cod. Pal. Germ. 350 ) is a collection of Middle High German song poetry and early Meistersangs , the oldest part of which is dated around 1300. Most of the traditional songs and chants are ascribed to the 12 old masters .

The codex includes singing sayings that are attributed to Reinmar von Zweter , Walther von der Vogelweide , Friedrich von Sonnenburg , Frauenlob and the Marner as well as some songs that may refer to Reinmar the Elder , Walther von Mezze, Leuthold von Seven , Reinmar von Brennenberg , Rainbow, Konrad von Würzburg , the boys Meissner and Boppe .

description

The codex today consists of three originally separate collections, which were written from the end of the 13th century to the 14th century. In this compilation it contains an almost representative cross-section of the different types of chanting.

The manuscript consists of three parchment fascicles: I, II and III, since Lachmann referred to as D (as addendum d), H (as addendum h) and R. These fascicles have been bound in a super exlibris binding made of calfskin with the portrait of the Palatinate Elector Ottheinrich since 1558 . On the front there is the image of the elector and the year 1558 embossed in gold plates, on the back the coat of arms of the Palatinate. Embossed brass fittings and two strap clasps are attached to the cover. Dimensions: 240 × 155 mm.

Origin and dating

The dating is based on the written evidence, the localization based on the written language.

Part I ( D - sheets 1–40 [1–256], d - sheets 41–42 [257–261]) around 1300; Font: Gothic minuscule or notula; Writing language: South Rhine-Franconian with Alemannic forms, Rheinpfalz.

Part II ( H - Bl. 43–64 [1–119], h - Bl. 64 [1–3]) 2nd quarter of the 14th century; Font: Gothic minuscule or notula; Writing language: Rhine-Franconian / Hessian, South Hesse.

Part III ( R - Bl. 65–68 [1–16]) 2nd quarter of the 14th century; Font: Textura ; Writing language: Northern Bavarian, Northern Bavaria.

The evaluation of the different scribes' hands suggests that I and II were already combined in a library in the second half of the 14th century, possibly in one volume.

content

Most of the collection is organized by subject. D, H and R each have their own picture in terms of content.

D (part I)

The first 10 sections (verses 1-215) are assigned to Reinmar von Zweter. The authorship of stanzas 216–238 has not been clarified and can best be understood as "an anonymous property from the area and in the successor of Reinmar von Zweter". The stanzas 239-256 contain texts by Walther von der Vogelweide.

d

The first part of the cpg 350 is completed by two 'Wartburgkrieg' tone verses in the prince tone of Heinrich von Ofterdingen, followed by three verses that suggest women's praise.

H (part II)

One of the most important sources for the genre development of the song poetry of the 14th century is part II (H), which is a connection between the older (e.g. handed down in the Heidelberg song manuscript C / Codex Manesse around 1300) and the younger type of song poetry (handed down in the Kolmarer Liederhandschrift / Cgm 4997 around 1460). It is almost exclusively a collection of sacred songs. The focus is on the veneration of Mary. Worldly love is represented, if at all, only in contrast to the healing heavenly love. There are mainly notes by Reinmar von Brennenberg, Friedrich von Sonnenburg, Reinmar von Zweter and - with uncertain allocation - Frauenlob, Regenbogen, the Marner, Konrad von Würzburg, Walther von der Vogelweide, Junge Meissner and Boppe. The structure principle (God, Mary, Redemption) may have sprung from medieval lecture practice.

R (part III)

R represents a peculiarity with regard to the headings. In front of each of the 16 registered stanzas, the toner finder and the tone name are mentioned, an unusual practice in the master song tradition. Six stanzas in Regenbogen's Long Tone, seven stanzas in Marner's Long Tone and three stanzas in Frauenlob's Delicate Tone are recorded. Only poetry by the so-called crowned masters can be found here, although research only considers the Marner's authorship to be certain in stanza 13. Thematically, the collection deals with purely spiritual matters, namely with violent Jewish polemics, with the disputation motive and the Marienpreis.

With the surviving 215 proverbs, the manuscript D represents the second largest traditional source after the Codex Manesse for the singing sayings of Reinmar von Zweter. The core area of D contains almost the entire work of this poet. Due to the special knowledge of the text as well as the good writing language, the approach is followed in research that the poet himself carried out the present arrangement or at least contributed to it.
