Reinmar von Brennenberg (also known as Reimar II. Von Brennberg ) (* around 1210, † 1271 ) was a knight of Brennberg , minstrel and ministerial of the Bishop of Regensburg in the 13th century.

Life and poetry

The von Brennenbergs, an old line of the Nordgau with their ancestor Perinhart von Briemberch, were vassals of the St. Emmeram monastery in Regensburg. Later they were Truchseese and ministerials in the service of the bishops of Regensburg . The minstrel Reimar II emerged from them. The poet from the Upper Palatinate, Reimar II, was able to inspire a lot with his songs and was known throughout Germany. He learned poetry and love singing at a Viennese court. His master and friend was the well-known minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide , whom he mentions in his poem The Lament .

In 1229 Reimar II accompanied Bishop Siegfried von Regensburg on the sixth crusade to Rome, to see Emperor Friedrich II , in order to conduct negotiations and to inform him about the situation of various cities in Bavaria. Originally this crusade was supposed to go to the Holy Land , but that didn't happen. On his crusades, there were seven in total, he got to know new cultures, legends and fairy tales, which gave him inspiration for his poems and songs. A total of ten songs by Reinmar II von Brennenberg have been preserved.
