Life
Journalistic career
Laabs, from Hamburg, studied philosophy and political science and lived in Israel for two years . He started working as a reporter for the tabloid Hamburger Morgenpost in 1992 . According to biographical information, from 1995 to 1996 he was a freelancer for the television program DAS! and Extra 3 from Norddeutscher Rundfunk . Then he worked a. a. for the private broadcasters MTV and Sat.1 . From 1999 to 2001 he graduated from the Henri Nannen School of Journalism in Hamburg.
From 2001 to 2003 he worked for the Los Angeles Times with a focus on terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . He was also an advisor on Islamist terrorism to the John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York . He gave interviews to several national and international broadcasters (including BBC Four and France 24 ). In the following years he worked as a journalist for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung , the Financial Times Deutschland , the Spiegel and the Stern .
He worked u. a. as a lecturer at the Henri Nannen School in Hamburg, where he lives today.
Activity as a documentary filmmaker
Laabs has been a director , screenwriter and producer of numerous documentaries and features since 2001 , producing for the public broadcasters Arte, ZDF , 3sat , NDR, SWR , BR , ARD and WDR . One of his essays was the basis for the documentary 2006 Hamburg Lectures by Romuald Karmakar . In 2007 he directed the documentary film Operation OPEC - Terrorist Attack in Vienna, which analyzes the political background to the OPEC hostage-taking , and in 2008 he and Karmakar co-authored the WDR radio play "Well stop grinning" - fragments of the Stammheim trial . Originally he was in charge of the development of the documentary Gold Rush - The Story of the Treuhand in 2012 , but then withdrew the director due to differences of opinion with the producer Thomas Kufus .
Political non-fiction author
Laabs is the author of several political non-fiction books . His first monograph, Deadly Errors. The failure of politics and secret services in the context of September 11th , which he published in 2003 together with Oliver Schröm , was described as an extraordinary research achievement despite the cautious response. The book The German Gold Rush. The true story of the Treuhand from 2012 was discussed in part in the economic history, which classified it as a successful, popular, sometimes polarizing work. Eckhard Jesse noted critically that it was not free from " conspiracy-theoretical elements". From April to August 2012, Laabs was represented with his volume in Manager Magazin 's bestseller list . In 2014, together with Stefan Aust , he published a work about the NSU that was widely reviewed in the media . The book was mainly perceived by large parts of the feature pages as a comprehensive and well-researched introductory chronicle . It is necessary, but in the opinion of some opinion makers it does not come close to Aust's work on the RAF ( The Baader-Meinhof Complex ). Laabs and Aust were on Homeland Security in June 2014 . The state and the series of murders of the NSU listed on the Spiegel bestseller list for non-fiction books.
In the course of the most recent book publication, he was invited to various readings and lectures. He was also called in as a podium guest by political parties and their foundations, such as Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Baden-Württemberg as well as the left-wing parliamentary group in the federal government and Hesse and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation . Laabs and Aust were also conference participants of the “Right-Wing Extremism Commission” of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen under the leadership of Cem Özdemir and Gesine Agena .
