Hamburg Lessons is a documentary by Romuald Karmakar from 2006 .

action

The film contains hate sermons by Imam Mohammed Fazazi in the Al-Quds Mosque in Hamburg .

In January 2000, in the last days of the fasting month of Ramadan , Fazazi gave several so-called lessons in the prayer room of the mosque , during which those present could ask questions about various aspects of life, which the Imam answered in an Islamic discourse on the basis of Sharia law . These sessions were videotaped by an unknown person and sold in bookstores. After the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington , it became known that Fazazi was the confidante of three of the four suicide pilots. Muhammad Fazazi was born in Spain in 2003 as a member of the group that launched the Casablanca attacksperpetrated, arrested and sentenced to 30 years in prison. Investigations against him have never been initiated in Germany.

The film recreates two of these lessons. The film was released in selected German cinemas on September 20, 2007.

Contributors

Manfred Zapatka can be seen in the film as the reciter of the sermons in German .

controversy

The film was already shown at the Berlinale 2006 , where it received attention as a “film on the situation” in connection with the then current cartoon dispute. Nevertheless, for a year and a half no distributor was ready to show the film in German cinemas. Jörg Lau , editor of Die Zeit , suspects what the film shows is "unwelcome because it could reinforce existing fears of Islam".
