life and work

Anne Kunze studied history, law and journalism in Hamburg, Berlin, Rome and Mexico City. In her master's thesis in history, she examined the violent practices of the November pogrom in 1938 in East Westphalia. During her studies she wrote as a freelance journalist a. a. for “Die Zeit”, Zeit Wissen and taz with a focus on economics, health, migration, social affairs and contemporary history. From October 2010 to June 2011 she worked as a research assistant at the Bucerius Institute for Research of Contemporary German History and Society in Haifa, Israel. From January 2012 to December 2014 she was an editor in the economic department of “Zeit” in Hamburg. Since January 2015 she has been a reporter in the investigative department of “Zeit” in Berlin.

In her reports, Kunze repeatedly describes systemic grievances and conditions of exploitation in German industry. In particular, Kunze has followed the conditions in the meat industry in several reports. In 2014 she uncovered systematic fraud with the seal of approval of the Neuland -verein and disclosed how meat from factory farming was sold under the certification for animal welfare.

For her report “Die Schlachtordnung” on the living and working conditions of Eastern European contract workers in the Lower Saxony slaughter industry, she received several prizes, including the Herbert Riehl Heyse Prize 2015 and the German Reporter Prize 2015 in the category “Investigation”. The jury of the Herbert Riehl Heyse Prize described the “furious text” as an example of “haunting journalism that gets under your skin”. The jury in the “Investigation” category of the Reporter Prize ruled that “The Battle Order” was a text “that could change the conditions of factory farming in Germany - if it has not already done it”.

In 2015, together with Stefan Willeke , on the occasion of the tragic story of a worker who accidentally became pregnant, she again reported on the working conditions at Tönnies and the attempt to influence the statements of the person concerned, who had abandoned her child out of desperation. The employer of the woman who worked at Tönnies was the Romanian Dumitru Dan Miculescu, who as a subcontractor also has shares in other companies, some of which also acted as subcontractors or partners of subcontractors for Tönnies.
