New territory (brand)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neuland brand certifies products from animal welfare as animal welfare labels in Germany.

Requirements

In contrast to conventional (mass) animal husbandry, the association provides clear guidelines which must be observed for animal husbandry, slaughter and sale of the products under the Neuland brand. The association also regularly checks its members for compliance with the guidelines:

  • Keeping on straw without fixation
  • Run into the open air or grazing
  • Daylight in the stable
  • only regional feed
  • Prohibition of genetically modified feed
  • no preventive antibiotic treatment
  • rural agriculture with stock and area limits

Because of these high demands on animal husbandry, Neuland is the only program nationwide that, with the approval of the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) , is allowed to designate and apply as particularly species-appropriate .

history

The Neuland association for animal-friendly and environmentally friendly livestock farming e. V. , based in Bonn, was founded in 1988. Neuland was not founded as an organic brand , but as a concept for particularly species-appropriate animal husbandry. The aim was and is to practice social, quality-oriented, animal-friendly and environmentally friendly animal husbandry with high credibility and transparency on small and medium-sized farms. The brand was recognized in 1988 as a seal of approval by Neuland e. V. founded. Several social associations were involved, of which the German Animal Welfare Association (DTSchB), the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) and the Working Group on Rural Agriculture (AbL) still function as supporting associations. In addition, farmers and butchers are extraordinary members of the association.

distribution

Neuland products are sold exclusively in butcher shops or in Neuland farm shops. The distribution is organized decentrally through three marketing companies: in the north of Germany through the Art according GmbH & Co.KG, in the west through the Neuland Vertriebs GmbH, in the south through the producer organization south for particularly species-appropriate and environmentally friendly animal husbandry wV

In July 2018, the discounters Aldi Nord and Süd announced that they were selling pork products with the Neuland seal in some selected branches . The animals are slaughtered at Tönnies . Some association members criticized this practice.

criticism

In 2014, several media and nature conservation associations, including Deutschlandfunk and NABU , reported that under the supposed species-appropriate animal husbandry and the resulting placement of Neuland products in the premium segment as organic products, conventional animal husbandry took place in many cases and these products (poultry or lambs) Nevertheless, they were awarded the Neuland seal of approval and sold as coming from species-appropriate husbandry .
