Georg Karl von Brevern (also Karl Georg von Brevern ; born August 4, 1807 in Hallinap Harju , Estonia , † July 23, 1892 in Berlin ) was an Estonian lawyer , real privy councilor and member of the Russian State Council . He came from the German-Estonian noble family of the "von Brevern" .

Career

Georg Karl v. B. attended the Knights and Cathedral School in Reval from 1820 to 1825 , then studied from 1827 to 1832 at the University of Dorpat and graduated in 1834 with a law degree. His study trips took him between 1835 and 1838 to Germany , Switzerland and Italy . This was followed in 1838 by the office of deputy notary of the Livonian knighthood , in 1838 he became secretary of the Estonian knighthood and successfully campaigned for a right of use for farmers in the country. From 1844 to 1876 he worked in the imperial chancellery under Tsars Nicholas I (1825–1855) and Alexander II (1855–1881) in Saint Petersburg, focusing on the codification of state laws and the processing of questions about Baltic provincial law as well as the processing of Russian commercial and industrial law . From 1860 he was involved in the preparations for a judicial reform and was co-author of the so-called Zemstvo constitution and the Russian urban order. In 1860 Georg Karl v. B. appointed a privy councilor, from 1876 he was a senator and in 1877 he was appointed to the imperial council, where he worked in the department for laws and in 1885 in the general assembly. In 1879 he was appointed a real privy councilor. Brevern was interested in history, he supported researchers and promoted foreign research . He was an honorary member of the Society for History and Archeology of the Baltic Sea Provinces of Russia in Riga (GGuA) and the Estonian Literature Society, this “society was dedicated to German-Baltic culture and general national history”. He gave the literary society a total of 3,000 books and gave it 1616 volumes.

His grandparents were Heinrich Johann von Brevern (1749-1803) and Anna Elisabeth Staël von Holstein (1753-1824). His father was his son Heinrich Johann von Brevern auf Kostifer (1775-1824), his mother Helen Margarete Sophie was born von Benkendorff , with whom he was married in his first marriage. His paternal uncle was Christoph Engelbrecht von Brevern and his half-brother, from his second marriage to Maria De la Gardie , was Pontus Alexander Ludwig Graf von Brevern-de la Gardie .
