Heinz Brantl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinz Brantl (born March 27, 1924 in Graz , † June 13, 1977 in Vienna ) was a social democratic Austrian journalist .

Heinz Brantl worked for the Styrian daily newspaper “ Neue Zeit ” ( SPÖ ) in Graz from 1946 to 1954 , and from 1958–1961 he published the high-quality, party-affiliated weekly newspaper “Heute”, which fell victim to intrigues within the party.

At ORF , the Austrian state broadcaster, Brantl founded, directed and moderated the time-critical television magazine “Horizonte”. Alfred Payrleitner was co-founder . In 1967 the show was advertised as follows: views, explorations, information. The time-critical magazine with current reports abroad and polemical reports on Austria. Editing and presentation: Dr. Heinz Brantl. Gerald Szyszkowitz noted in a text about critical journalism in Austria that Heinz Brantl, the only one who researched precisely at the interface between politics and business on ORF, had lost his program “Horizonte” very quickly.

In 1966 Brantl was awarded the Dr.-Karl-Renner-Publizistikpreis .

Brantl was also the manager of several successful election campaigns by Bruno Kreisky . He was seen as a representative of a modern, liberal line of social democracy and as an intellectual bearer of hope.

From 1963 Brantl was part-time editor-in-chief of “Wien aktuell”, a quarterly magazine published abroad by the Vienna Tourist Board at the time . (The title was later continued as a monthly magazine by the Press and Information Service of the City of Vienna.)

Brantl died by suicide.
