Alfred Payrleitner (born March 10, 1935 in Vienna ; † April 4, 2018 ) was an Austrian journalist and author .

life and work

Alfred Payrleitner attended the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna, where he graduated in 1953. He then studied at the University of World Trade . In his diploma thesis he dealt with questions of Soviet economic accounting. He began his journalistic career with the Express newspaper . He then worked as a freelance journalist until 1967.

In 1967, Alfred Payrleitner became deputy editor-in-chief of ORF as deputy to Alfons Dalma . There Payrleitner was also the main department head for politics and current affairs. As a presenter, he appeared in the live reports on the National Council elections in 1970 and 1971 and in the ORF Report program.

In 1975, Alfred Payrleitner switched to the daily newspaper Kurier as chief commentator . In 1979 he returned to ORF and took over the main departments of Documentation (until 1984) and Education and Current Affairs (1984–1997). In the course of this activity he founded u. a. the programs Auslandsreport (since 2004 Weltjournal ), the award-winning documentary series Universum and Modern Times (with Werner Mück ).

In 2007 he was appointed honorary chairman of the readers' advocacy, but described this body as "pointless" due to a lack of skills. The readers' advocacy was founded by the editors-in-chief's association as the successor to the press council , which was dissolved in 2001.

After working for ORF, Payrleitner was again a commentator for the courier until 2009.
