Hansi Bochow-Blüthgen

Hansi Bochow-Blüthgen (born January 2, 1897 in Charlottenburg , † August 30, 1983 in Munich ; actually Hanna Dora Margarethe , née Blüthgen ; pseudonym: Lore Wiesner ) was a German writer , editor and literary translator .

Life and work

Bochow-Blüthgen, married to journalist Friedrich Walter Bochow since the mid-1920s , was the granddaughter of the illustrator Fedor Flinzer and niece of the writer Victor Blüthgen . The photographer Gisèle Freund and the writer Moscheh Ya'akov Ben-Gavriêl , who dedicated his story A lion has swallowed the moon to her, were among her friends.

After completing her training, Hansi Bochow-Blüthgen initially worked as a librarian and was employed in the book trade . Bochow-Blüthgen, which was a member of the Protection Association of German Writers and the Association of German Translators , gained recognition through numerous translations from English and American. Her best-known translation, which is still available today, is Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote ; however, half a century after its publication, its sensitive transmission was described as "old" by a critic of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . Even 50 years after it appeared on the German book market, however, her translation of the novel Der Kardinal by Henry Morton Robinson was praised in the Süddeutsche Zeitung as a "bestseller in best translation". As part of the German Youth Book Prize of 1959, Meindest DeJongs Tien Pao, a Chinese boy in Bochow-Blüthgen's transmission, received a premium. Also to be highlighted from their translations are: Praterveilchen by Christopher Isherwood , Stormwind - Flicka's son of Mary O'Hara and Bernard Grun's best musician anecdotes . Bochow-Blüthgen also translated texts by William Makepeace Thackeray , Katherine Anne Porter , Patricia Highsmith and Henry James into German.
