Pehr Osbeck (undated)

Pehr Osbeck ( pronunciation : [ ˌpæːʁ ˈuːsbɛk ], * May 9, 1723 in Socken Hålanda, today Ale community ; † December 23, 1805 in Hasslöv ) was a Swedish pastor, world traveler and naturalist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Osbeck ".

Life

Osbeck named himself after the small place Oset in which he was born. His parents were Hans Andersson, who had died in the boy's first years, and his wife Ragnhild (née Andersdotter). He began studying at Uppsala University in 1745, supported by benevolent supporters, and in the same year became a student of Carl von Linné . From 1750 to 1752, initially employed as a ship priest, he took part in a trip to East Asia and China that took him to the region around Canton and the island of Java . When he returned, he had 900 new plant species with him and presented them to Carl von Linné. In 1760 he was appointed pastor in Hasslöv in the province of Halland , in 1773 provost and in 1778 doctor of theology. Osbeck had been a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1758 and was one of the founding members of the Royal Science and Literature Society in Gothenburg . On April 15, 1772 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina with the academic surname Philolaus Crotoniensis (matriculation no. 767).

Osbeck was married to Susanna Dahlberg and had a son, Karl Gustaf Osbeck (1766–1841), who became a doctor.
