Anton Rolandsson Martin

Anton Rolandsson Martin (born August 3 . Jul / 14. August  1729 greg. Gut Müntenhof in White Stone , Estonia ; † 30th January 1785 in Turku ) was a Swedish polar explorer and botanist.

Life

Martin began his studies at the Royal Academy in Åbo . He received his doctorate on June 22, 1757 under Carl von Linné on the subject of Buxbaumia .

Linnaeus put him in 1758 on a whaler so that he could investigate the polar region. However, he could only stay a few days on Svalbard and then explored Norway . He is considered to be the first Swedish polar explorer. After his return he worked as a tutor in Finland.

His diary was published in 1881 under the title Dagbok vid en resa till Norrpolen eller Spitsbergen 1758 .
