Linnaeus apostle
As Apostles of Linnaeus 17 students from are Carl Linnaeus called, which he called plant collector sent to all parts of the world. Carl von Linné himself first used the term in 1750. It was the year in which he began his tenure as rector of Uppsala University .
history
The first trips were made possible thanks to the commitment of Count Carl Gustaf Tessin . He required the Swedish East India Company to allow a young scientist to travel on board their ships free of charge every year . The then director of the Swedish East India Company Magnus Lagerström , himself an avid supporter of the natural sciences, agreed. He paid special attention to each of the young travelers and personally recommended them for the care of the captains of the ships with which they traveled.
Not all of the students placed by Linnaeus were able to successfully complete their assignment. Linnaeus' first student who was sent on a trip did not survive the hardships: Christopher Tärnström , who set out for China from Gothenburg in 1745 , died at the end of the same year as a result of the unfamiliar climate.
Other of his students, e.g. B. Daniel Solander and Anders Sparrman , both of whom took part in James Cook's expeditions, or Carl Peter Thunberg enriched our knowledge of the earth's flora to a great extent through their extensive finds and descriptions .
