Wilfrid Jasper Walter Blunt

Wilfrid Jasper Walter Blunt (born July 19, 1901 in Ham ; † January 8, 1987 in Guildford ) was a British art historian .

Life

Wilfrid Blunt is the eldest son of Arthur Stanley Vaughan Blunt and Hilda Master. His two brothers were Christopher Evelyn Blunt (1904–1987) and Anthony Blunt (1907–1983).

From 1914 to 1920 he was trained at Marlborough College , then went to Worcester College in Oxford , moved to the Atelier Moderne in Paris and graduated from the Royal College of Art in London in 1923 .

He taught art from 1923 to 1938 at Haileybury College and from 1938 to 1959 at Eton College .

With the help of his friend William Thomas Stearn , he wrote the highly acclaimed book The Art of Botanical Illustration , published in 1950, which deals extensively with the history of botanical drawings.

After his retirement, he was curator of the Watts Museum in Compton from 1959 to 1985 and devoted himself entirely to writing biographies, usually art-related. Among them is The Compleat Naturalist: A Life of Linnaeus , a biography of Linnaeus .

Honors

He received the Veitch Memorial Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society for his book The Art of Botanical Illustration .
