Christopher Tärnström

Christopher Tärnström (* 1711 in Funbo , Uppland , Sweden ; † December 4, 1746 on Pulo Candor , Côn Đảo Islands Vietnam ) was a Swedish botanist and Protestant pastor. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Tärnström ".

Life

He first studied theology at Uppsala University . There he met Carl von Linné (Linnaeus) know. In 1739 he came to Östhammar as a Protestant pastor . In 1741 he went to Vaxholm .

In 1746, through the mediation of Linnaeus, he got a job as a pastor on the Kalmar ship . The ship of the Swedish East India Company was on its way to Canton in China . There he was supposed to collect samples for Linnaeus, so he was considered the first of the Linnaeus apostles .

On the way there, the ship had to wait for the end of the monsoon at the island of Pulo Candor (also: Poulo Candor , Con Son ). Tärnström fell ill there and died without ever having seen China.

His diary to Vietnam was published under the title: En resa mellan Europa och Sydostasien in 1746 .

Honor taxon

In his memory, Linnaeus dedicated the species Ternstroemia from the genus Pentaphylacaceae to him .
