Olof Torén

Olof Torén (* 1718 in Sätila , Västergötland , Sweden ; † 1753 in Näsinge , Bohuslän ) was a Swedish naturalist and Protestant pastor. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Torén ".

Life

After graduating from Uppsala University in 1737, Toren worked as a pastor until 1747. Then he made two trips as a ship chaplain on ships of the Swedish East India Company . The first voyage took him to Java on board the ship Hoppet . The ship set sail on January 26, 1748 and returned on July 11, 1749. The second journey began on April 8, 1750. He drove with the Götha Leijon to Surat in India and Canton in China. The ship stayed in Surat from September 1750 to February 1751 and then returned via Canton. It reached Sweden on June 26, 1752.

The second trip came about through the mediation of Carl von Linné . Torén's records were published in 1757 after his death. He probably died of an illness contracted in the tropics.

Honor taxon

Linnaeus named in honor Torén the genus Torenia from the family of Figworts .

Carl von Linné published the data of Torén together with those of Pehr Osbeck under the title Dagbok öfwer in ostindisk resa åren 1750, 1751, 1752.
