Fredrik Hasselquist (born January 3, 1722 in Törnevalla , Östergötland , † February 9, 1752 in Smyrna ) was a Swedish naturalist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Hasselq. ".

Life

Fredrik Hasselquist studied at Uppsala University from 1741 , where he did his doctorate under Carl von Linné . In June 1747 he defended his dissertation on the subject of Vires plantarum (The forces of plants).

On August 7, 1749, he set off from Stockholm on a trip to the Middle East . With the Ulrica he traveled to İzmir , where he spent the winter. In March 1750 he ventured from there to explore the interior of the country. He then sailed to Egypt where he spent about nine months in Cairo . With new money, he was finally able to continue on his way to Palestine in the spring of 1751 . He toured a. a. Jaffa , Jerusalem and Jericho . He returned to İzmir via Syria , Rhodes , Cyprus and Chios . Soon after his return he died of tuberculosis and was buried in the local cemetery.

Fredrik Hasselquist had not only amassed an extensive collection and numerous notes, but had also incurred extensive debts. It took the generosity of Queen Luise Ulrike for Hasselquist's material to be released and sent to Sweden.

On July 16, 1755, Linné finally received the Hasselquist collection from Baron Carl Gustaf Gammal Ehrencrona (1710–1781). In 1757 Linnaeus published his notes under the title Iter Palestinum eller Resa til Heliga Landet, 1749–1752 .
