Otto Eduard Graf von Zedlitz and Trützschler (born March 23, 1873 on Gut Schwentnig near Zobten , German Empire , † December 4, 1927 in Varberg ) was a German ornithologist and writer.

origin

His grandfather was the District President Carl Graf von Zedlitz-Trützschler (1800–1880). His parents were the cavalry captain Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Constantin von Zedlitz-Trützschler (* January 20, 1833 - February 1, 1888) and his wife Helene von Rohr (* January 21, 1839 - March 30, 1878) at Hohenwulsch near Stendal ,

He also had a sister Helene Dorothea (born March 3, 1878) who died on March 15, 1884.

Life

After the early death of his mother, his father also died relatively early. As an orphan , he grew up in the household of his aunt Elisabeth Zedlitz-Trützschler (* 1826), a long-time provost of the Freiadligen Magdalenenstift in Altenburg. Otto Graf Zedlitz's passion was the collection of bird hides and the associated worldwide hunt for birds. He developed his passion at an early age on his parents' estate, which had been in the family since 1734. In his native meadows and forests he became an excellent shooter very early on and observed their fauna with interest. He spent his school days in Breslau . He later became a law student, although this did not correspond to his actual desire to study zoology. He bowed to the wishes of his uncle Robert von Zedlitz-Trützschler , who described zoology as an art without a job . There followed a few years as a lieutenant in the body cuirassing of Breslau.

Soon his thirst for research drew him into the big wide world. As early as 1900 he accompanied Arthur Berger and Captain J. Roth to Norway and Spitzbergen. In 1904, 1905 and 1906 he traveled to Tunis . Together with Paul Spatz and his friend Alfred Blanchet , he toured Algeria and Northeast Africa. An ornithological trip to Eritrea and the neighboring areas of Ethiopia followed from 1908 to 1909 . He was accompanied by his taxidermist CW Müller. In July and August of 1910 he took part in the Zeppelin study trip with the steamer Mainz in the arctic waters. The route included northern Norway , Bear Island , the western part of Svalbard and the Arctic ice edge. In 1911 he toured the Sinai Peninsula . In the spring of 1913 he went back to Algeria with his old companion Paul Spatz. Both explored in particular the areas that Walter Rothschild, 2nd Baron Rothschild , and Ernst Hartert had not yet explored. The First World War took him from 1915 to 1918 to western Russia in the swampy Shchara region and the Prypiat swamps . After the war, due to the changed political situation, he left Germany and moved to Tovhult in Kalv, Älvsborgs län, Sweden.

Zedlitz was a member of the German Ornithological Society , became a committee member in 1915 and held the post of second chairman from 1921 to 1923. In 1923 he became a corresponding member of the American Ornithologists' Union . Zedlitz was also an honorary member of the Société ornithologique de Françe (today: La Société d'Etudes Ornithologiques de France) and of the Silesian Ornithologists' Association in 1926 . Most of his publications appeared in the Journal of Ornithology . He also published articles in ornithological monthly reports , articles on reproductive biology , game and dog , Revue française d'ornithologie , Fauna och Flora , Södra Älvsborgs läns jaktvårdsförenings årsbok .

With his contributions to the systematics of palaeoarctic and African birds, he expanded the previous research tasks in ornithology, for example by relating the breeding season of African birds to the periodicity of the climate or by viewing the weight of the birds as an expression of physiologically-related fluctuations in fat accumulation.

The Count's other numerous friends and acquaintances included Tsar Ferdinand I of the Bulgarians, Lord Walther Rothschild, Baron Carlo von Erlanger , Hans Hermann Carl Ludwig von Berlepsch and Friedrich von Lucanus .

Taxa

Graf von Zedlitz described the taxa of different species and subspecies.

species

  • Hartert-Camaroptera ( Camaroptera harterti ) ( Zedlitz , 1911)

Subspecies

  • Blauastrild ( Uraeginthus angolensis natalensis ) ( Zedlitz , 1911)
  • Brown-winged mouse bird ( Colius striatus hilgerti ) ( Zedlitz , 1910)
  • Brillentaube ( Streptopelia decipiens elegans ) ( Zedlitz , 1913)
  • Rock dove ( Columba livia palaestinae ) ( Zedlitz , 1912)
  • Masked Pirol ( Oriolus larvatusreichenowi ) ( Zedlitz , 1916)
  • Great Tit-Warbler ( Parisoma subcaeruleum ansorgei ) ( Zedlitz , 1921)
  • Nose strip honey indicator ( Indicator minor riggenbachi ) ( Zedlitz , 1915)
  • Pearl-bearded bird ( Trachyphonus margaritatus somalicus ) ( Zedlitz , 1910)
  • Marsh harrier ( Circus aeruginosus harterti ) ( Zedlitz , 1914)
  • Stone Swallow ( Ptyonoprogne fuligula pusilla ) ( Zedlitz , 1908)
  • Quail ( Coturnix coturnix erlangeri ) ( Zedlitz , 1912)
  • Quail deer ( Ortygospiza fuscocrissa mülleri ) ( Zedlitz , 1911)
  • Willow Tit ( Poecile montanus loennbergi ) ( Zedlitz , 1925)

A subspecies of the Kaptriel ( Burhinus capensis ehrenbergi ) ( Zedlitz , 1910) is considered invalid. It turned out that this was the already described species Burhinus capensis dodsoni ( Ogilvie-Grant , 1899). In the case of the subspecies Bonasia bonasia grassmanni ( Zedlitz , 1920), it was later shown that this subspecies of the hazel grouse was described by Carl von Linné as Tetrastes bonasia bonasia as early as 1758 . Together with Friedrich von Lucanus he described Turdus viscivorus jubilaeus in 1917 . Here, too, it turned out later that it is the subspecies of the mistletoe Turdus viscivorus viscivorus ( Linnaeus , 1758). There are many other exhibits from the collection of Graf von Zedlitz in the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet , since he bequeathed his entire collection of 7,481 birds to the museum. As a thank you, the Swedish Academy of Science awarded the donor the Great Golden Linnaeus Medal .

Honors and dedications

Oscar Neumann dedicated a subspecies of the desert bullfinch ( Bucanetes githagineus zedlitzi ) to him in 1907 , as the latter had provided specimens from his private collection. Two years later, Anton Reichenow named a subspecies of the short-winged Cistus singer ( Cisticola brachypterus zedlitzi ) under the protonym Cisticola zedlitzi in his honor. This type specimen also came from the von Zedlitz collection. The taxon Sylvietta zedlitzi (Reichenow, 1918) is actually the subspecies of the red rein Sylvietta ( Sylvietta whytii jacksoni ) ( Sharpe , 1897). In 1922 Nils Carl Gustaf Fersen Gyldenstolpe described a subspecies of the gray-headed sparrow ( Passer griseus zedlitzi ). However, this is in all probability Passer griseus ugandae ( Reichenow , 1904).
