Friedrich Kurt Hermann Lucanus , since 1888 of Lucanus , (born June 20, 1869 in Berlin ; † February 18, 1947 in Buschow ) was a German professional soldier (lieutenant colonel a. D .; Dr. hc), ornithologist, animal psychologist and author of popular science animal books . ("Lucanus" is a learned Latinization of the family name Lauck in the 16th century.)

He was the son of Hermann Lucanus , who was raised to the nobility in 1888 , lived in Berlin and was primarily concerned with the world of birds and bird migration. In 1904 he published (after a lecture at the 5th International Zoological Congress in Berlin in 1901) "The height of bird migration and its direction towards the wind based on aeronautical observations". "In the magic of animal life", which also identified him as a responsible hunter, found widespread use. His son Hermann von Lucanus continued the work of Lucanus, especially on birds of prey, to a certain extent.

Lucanus was chairman of the German Ornithological Society from 1921 to 1926 and from 1923 Corresponding Fellow of the American Ornithologists' Union .
