The collection from the holdings of the Spanish Navy, founded in 1792, changed its location several times in the 19th century until it was housed in the Admiralty building built between 1915 and 1928 in 1930. The museum is subordinate to the Spanish Ministry of Defense and is managed by the Navy.

Inside there are numerous shipping maps from the time of the Catholic Kings and later epochs, which tell of the Spanish voyages of discovery and the colonized countries of South America. In addition to wooden models from past centuries and numerous portraits of Spanish seafarers, designs for the first submarines and torpedoes up to the 20th century are on display.
