Wallago is a genus from the family of the common catfish (Siluridae), which occurs in Asia from Pakistan to Indonesia . It consists of the common helicopter catfish ( Wallago attu ) as the only recent species and the extinct species Wallago maemohensis , whichlivedin the Miocene .
features
They are elongated fish with a large mouth, the crevice of which extends at least to the front edge of the eye, which has a free orbital edge and is not covered by skin. The lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. The dorsal fin has four or more rays. The caudal fin is forked. The gills have more than 13 Branchiostegal rays .
Systematics
The genus includes two types:
- Common helicopter catfish ( Wallago attu )
- † Wallago maemohensis
Another possible Wallago species was described by Rudolf Kner in 1866 as Silurodon hexanema , but the status of this species is currently unclear, it could be con-specific with Wallago attu .
For a long time the species Wallagonia leerii and Wallagonia maculatus were also included in the genus Wallago . Due to osteological investigations, however, they were separated into a separate genus, Wallagonia , together with the newly described species Wallagonia micropogon . In addition, it was found that Wallago and Wallagonia are in fact not closely related within the catfish family. The assumed generic affiliation of all these catfish species due to their often overlapping habitats thus turned out to be a fallacy.
