Erika Seywald (born November 18, 1955 in Berg im Drautal ) is an Austrian painter.

Live and act

Erika Seywald has been involved in abstract painting since the 1970s and presents her partly large-format, colorful pictures in solo or group exhibitions. Her work includes graphic works in monotype technique, egg tempera and oil paintings. Topics are the origin of life and its transience, the determination of nature and the cosmos and man in his surrender.

After graduating from high school in Lienz East Tyrol , she attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna from 1974 to 1979 , where she was a student of Gustav Hessing . After completing her studies in art at the academy and history at the University of Vienna , she received a scholarship for Turkey from 1978 to 1982 and dealt with Byzantine cave painting, sky observation and nature studies in Cappadocia near Ürgüp and Göreme . Since 1982 she has been teaching at the GRG3 Gymnasium Hagenmüllergasse in Vienna. Since 1993 she has been a member of the Künstlerhaus Wien .

In the "sand technique" she developed, she uses fine-grained corundum to draw traces on the horizontally lying canvas and thus separates the diluted oil paints from one another, and coarse-grained quartz to give the colored surfaces of the abstract figures their own structure. While the coarse grains of sand are removed again after the work is finished, the fine-grained sand lines remain across the canvas and give the picture an aura through their glitter in artificial light. Erika Seywald has refined and further developed this technique several times.

In addition to large-format works with poetic titles, she also created variations of heads, angels, animals and mythical creatures as well as sky studies, water images and graphic insights into the microcosm.

Erika Seywald lives and works in Vienna / Austria.
