Ortenburg Castle (2006)

Ortenburg Castle , also called Unterhaus Castle or Patern Castle , is located in the village of Unterhaus in the municipality of Baldramsdorf in Carinthia . It is a building from the 18th century and is a listed building . The building houses the “1. Carinthian Handicraft Museum ”.

history

Emperor Friedrich III had the building located below the Ortenburg . erected by the builder Hans Schwab. At that time, the property belonged to the Ortenburg lordship . The Prince Alfons of Porcia , resident in Spittal , had the “old walls” restored around 1710 and donated it to the Hieronymites as a monastery. It was supposed to serve as a base for fighting secret Protestantism . Just a few decades later, the building was in disrepair and was rebuilt as a castle in 1767/1773 using parts of the building from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Order of the Hieronymites was abolished under Emperor Josef II in the 18th century, but Ortenburg Castle served as a monastery until the beginning of the 19th century. Gustav Ritter von Gröller acquired the property in 1871, and his son-in-law, Baron Lambert von Glanstätten, had the castle restored around 1912 and decorated with battlements. His heirs sold the castle to the Phoenix insurance company. Since 1938, Ortenburg Castle has belonged to the Baldramsdorf community, which rented the premises for a long time until they set up a craft museum there in 1977 and a China collection from 2006 to 2015.

Building description

The three-storey Ortenburg Castle consists of several wings that enclose a courtyard in the shape of a horseshoe. The west wing is significantly shorter than the east wing. The west facade has a historicizing stepped gable and is flanked by a tower with a crenellated wreath , in the upper area of which there are loopholes. The medieval tower and the other parts of the building have no real defensive character. The historicizing battlements on the tower and on the two side facades were not erected until the roof was renewed around 1912. The rooms on the first floor have groin and barrel vaults with lancet caps from the 17th century. On the first floor, in the former refectory of the monastery, there is a coffered ceiling made of brown-stained spruce with an IHS symbol made of light maple in the middle.

Craft Museum

A handicraft museum has been housed in the former monastery since 1977, showing more than 40 fully equipped workshops from past centuries. Since 2015, one of the most important China collections in Austria has existed on the entire second floor with around 2300 objects. Other rooms in the castle are used for cultural events.
