Normal way | Ascent from the Gmünder Hütte via the Ochsenhütte (unmarked) |
The Große Sonnblick or Malteiner Sonnblick , a summit with a height of 3030 m above sea level. A. , is located in the Hafner group of the Hohe Tauern in Austria and is the easternmost peak in the Alps, which exceeds an altitude of 3000 meters. The summit is located approx. 18 km as the crow flies northwest of Gmünd in Carinthia and approx. 8.5 km as the crow flies northeast of the Hochalmspitze . The normal ascent from the Gmünder Hütte, with no inclines in the upper part , is not difficult in snow-free and dry conditions , but is difficult to climb due to the great difference in altitude (approx. 1900 meters in altitude). In view of the lack of markings, a good sense of direction is an advantage on this tour. If the weather permits, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Großer Hafner ( 3076 m above sea level ) and the Hochalmspitze ( 3360 m above sea level ) from the summit .
rise
The ascent route leads in approx. 5–6 hours from the Gmünder Hütte ( 1185 m above sea level ) first over a forest road to the uncultivated Ochsenhütte ( 1884 m above sea level ), then over a footbridge across a stream (from here no climb) northwards over partly steep grassy slopes to an alpine pasture near the Kleiner Melniksee , now further north-west through a tangle of blocks up into a cirque south of the Mittlerer Sonnblick , over a steep scree slope into a notch and finally in a south-westerly direction over the rocky summit ridge (surefootedness required) to the highest Point.
Neighboring peaks
To the east of the Großer Sonnblick is the Mittlere Sonnblick ( 3000 m ). The two peaks are connected by a ridge that can also be climbed without climbing.
