The Roman Catholic parish church Mörtschach stands on a hill above the town of Mörtschach in Carinthia . It is consecrated to St. Leonhard .

description

The church is a medium-sized, late Gothic building. It was built in 1516 and consists of a nave with double-stepped buttresses and a choir with a five-eighth end . The south tower has pointed arch windows and is crowned by a pointed gable helmet. A bell was cast by Georg Grassmayr in 1710. The vestibule with side arch openings is connected to the cemetery wall. The west portal with a pointed arch and a round arch opening made of serpentine has a round bar frame , is dated with the year 1516 and provided with a coat of arms, a consecration cross and a Leonhard label. The mural of St. Leonhard in a landscape to the right of the portal dates from the middle of the 19th century.

A ribbed vault rises above the single-aisle, four-bay nave on wall templates with circular services . The gallery in the entrance yoke from the time it was built was expanded in the Baroque period with a wooden stand over two columns. A star rib vault rests on consoles above the choir. On the south side an iron-studded door with beveled garments leads into the sacristy . Above it, a pointed arched door leads to the tower.

Facility

The high altar, made in 1754/55, shows the church saint St. Leonhard in the middle picture and the Assumption in the upper picture . The side figures, Saint Anthony of Padua , Nicholas , Johann Nepomuk and a holy bishop were painted over white in the 19th century. The left side altar shows an image of the Sacred Heart , flanked by the statues of the princes of the apostles Peter and Paul . The right side altar hides a Pietà in the middle niche , between King David and a second king. The pulpit with pigtail decoration, which was built around 1800, bears the figure of Christ as the Good Shepherd on the sound cover . The group of guardian angels on the south wall of the nave dates from the 18th century, the church pews from 1700.
