The Carinthian Tauernflower or Saumnarbe ( Lomatogonium carinthiacum ) is an annual plant from the gentian family (Gentianaceae) native to the Eastern Alps .

The Carinthian Tauernflower is an annual plant and reaches heights of one to twelve centimeters. The mostly somewhat branched, square stem grows upright. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate. The lowest leaves are narrowed into a short petiole, the other leaves are sessile.

The calyx is shorter than the crown , the latter is around 10 mm long and has a diameter of 12 to 16 mm. The color is pale gray-blue to white, often slightly greenish on the outside. Flowering time is August to October. The fruits are many-seeded capsules .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.

Distribution and locations

The Carinthian Tauernblümchen is native to the Alps, the Carpathians and Asia. It occurs in the Eastern Alps in Carinthia, Styria, Salzburg, Tyrol, South Tyrol, in Germany only in the Berchtesgaden area.

It grows in short-grass, gappy pasture lawn, in earthy lawn gaps and in bare lawns. It occurs particularly over intermediate rock in the upper montane to alpine altitude range . It is common locally, but rare otherwise. It occurs primarily in the Elynetum, but also in societies of the Salicion herbaceae or arctic-alpine alluvial banks (Caricion bicolori-atrofuscae).
