Maria Frieden is a chapel in Kippenheim , Archdiocese of Freiburg , and a pilgrimage church . The chapel is dedicated to the Virgin Mary .

history

On the evening of October 15, 1944, the parish of St. Mauritius gathered together with Pastor Johannes Heß in the parish church to take the following pledge: “If we don't have to leave our home and our village is saved from major damage, then we want to be in our district build a chapel on the mountain in honor of the Queen of Peace. "

In January / February 1945 the situation in the village became critical. Surrounding communities had already been evacuated, churches and numerous residential buildings in the area were destroyed by flames. The neighboring community of Mahlberg was under artillery fire almost every evening. On the afternoon of April 18, 1945, the artillery approached and Kippenheim was also under fire.

One of the first hits destroyed the bowl of the stick fountain in front of the town hall. As if by a miracle, the statue of Mary in the middle still stood on its pedestal. Further hits landed in the cemetery and in the farrenstall . But the place was spared major damage.

On May 21, 1945, the Board of Trustees passed the resolution to build the chapel. Two plots on the Hohbühl were chosen as the location. The groundbreaking ceremony took place just 13 months later, and the foundation stone was laid another month later. The plans were drawn up by the architect Josef Maria Weber from Freiburg im Breisgau .

Work began in mid-1946, which was characterized by a great shortage of materials. Often it was only possible to get building materials in exchange for cigars and cigarettes.

On August 15, 1947, the "Maria Frieden" chapel was completed and was given a festive service by Prelate Dr. Schuldis handed over to their destination.

Today the chapel is a popular place for weddings, pilgrimage services take place twice a year on the Ascension of Christ and the Assumption of Mary . In May and October, Marian devotions invite believers from near and far on Sundays .

Bells

The bells were cast in the Rincker brothers' bell foundry in Sinn (Hessen) in 1948 and consecrated on March 19, 1949 in front of "Maria Frieden".
