Pilgrimage Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (Rechberg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is located in the Rechberg district of Beratzhausen . It is a branch church in the Beratzhausen-Pfraundorf parish community.

history

The origin of the church dates back to the Middle Ages , because in a document from 1401 it is already referred to as an "old building". The Romanesque building had two towers.

According to the original legend , the lord of the castle of Ehrenfels was on the hunt; his dogs would have provided a roebuck. The latter, however, remained sitting very calmly on his hind legs and looked into the branches of a tree. The image of grace was in the treetop. The Ehrenfelser then took the vow to build a church at the foot of the mountain. But roebucks would have carried the building material up the mountain every night; then he decided to build the church on the Rechberg.

Church building

The choir and tower still contain Gothic elements. The current church is to be assigned to the baroque . In 1716 and 1743 major renovations and extensions followed.

The pilgrimage church is a hall building with a retracted choir; the nave consists of four bays that were created during renovations in the 18th century. The church has a facade tower with an onion dome and a pilaster structure . The cemetery walling dates from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The patronage is celebrated annually on July 2nd, which is still an occasion for pilgrimages by believers mainly from Beratzhausen, Kallmünz , Hohenfels and Lupburg .

Interior

The legend of the founding is depicted in the ceiling fresco of the nave. On the ceiling of a rotunda supported by columns, people of various classes admire this miracle. On the largely unwooded Rechberg, roebucks carry the building material on a serpentine-like winding path between their antlers, but on top of the hill is the already completed church. The unknown painter also depicted himself in the fresco.

The high altar from the 18th century is located in the Gothic choir . The miraculous image is integrated into this altar. The figure is a mounted wooden statue depicting a Mary with the child . There is a description of this from 1510, so that it can be assumed that it originated in the late Gothic period. On the altar are the minor characters John the Baptist and his parents Zacharias and Elizabeth and St. Joseph with the baby Jesus .

The nave fresco The Glorification of the Rechberg Image and the choir fresco God the Father as the ruler of the world from 1772 are attributed to Otto Gebhard . In the church there are many votive tablets and votive candles , which prove the continued tradition of pilgrimage.
