Ziteil
The Marian shrine Ziteil is a place of pilgrimage on the eastern slope of Piz Curvér ( 2971.8 m above sea level ) in the municipality of Surses in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland . The pilgrimage church with pilgrim house is located at 2429 m above sea level. M. above Salouf and is therefore the highest place of pilgrimage in the Eastern Alps (higher in the Western Alps: Mont Thabor , Rocciamelone, etc.) and one of the highest churches in the Alps (higher chapels, e.g. on the Stilfser Joch and on the Col de l ' Iseran ).
After two apparitions of Mary in the summer of 1580, a modest chapel was built in Ziteil. The church was rebuilt in 1849. In 1959 a new building took place. A pilgrim house attached to the pilgrimage chapel has room for 150 pilgrims.
Ziteil offers a comprehensive view of the Oberhalbsteiner and Albula Alps ( Bergüner Stocks , Err and Forbesch groups), as well as the Piz Bernina ( 4049 m above sea level ).
Pilgrimage history
The pilgrimages go back to the year 1580, when a small woman dressed in white, who had covered her face with a white veil, appeared to an 18-year-old girl in Oberhalbstein , who had gone up the mountain to collect wood. The woman said to the girl:
"Go and tell the people in the land of Oberhalbstein that they have now sinned so much that they cannot endure more. If things do not improve, God will severely punish them so that not only the crops will wither, but the people of the Let the youngest to the oldest to die. I can no longer intercede with my son for this people. "
After the woman disappeared, the girl dared not tell anyone about it. The next day, when they came to the same place, the woman, who had recently been the same, appeared to him and asked why they had not told the people what she had told them to do. When the girl replied that it was entitled to say anything, she repeated again the same thing, adding that there should not be afraid and people say it should coaches do and with the Cross processions stop and then he will easily forgive the sins of God. This time the girl should not fail to inform the people of what she was told, otherwise she herself would be punished.
Nevertheless, the girl did not dare to tell anyone about it and the following night, when she was sleeping next to her mother, a voice began to call the girl. When the mother heard the voice for the second time, she asked who was calling. To the answer that it was not she who was called, but her daughter, she woke her up and the voice repeated the same thing as the two previous times. The mother asked her daughter what had happened and whether the woman had spoken to her earlier. The next day, the mother told another woman everything she had learned about her daughter, and she told her husband. Since he reported to the governor of the high court, the governor took mother and daughter into questioning and prescribed processions, in which over 3000 people took part each time.
Eight days later the same woman appeared to a 16-year-old boy in Ziteil: he saw a woman kneeling in prayer by a small spring. When he was afraid to call two men for help, the woman called the boy affectionately and told him the same thing as she said to the girl before, adding that she had not stopped praying to her son for the people. But it is necessary that the people sincerely convert and continue with the processions, otherwise they will not be heard. Before she left, he saw her reddened knee, as if to show that one had to struggle with prayer. After taking a few steps, he turned to see the woman, but she was gone. When processions began to be held, all the withered crops began to turn green again and gave rise to hope for a very good harvest.
These events are recorded in a report dated July 6, 1580, which Albert de Baselgia, the governor of the Oberhalbstein High Court , prepared for the attention of the Apostolic Nuncio , Giovanni Francesco Bonomi , Bishop of Vercelli, and which is in the Vatican Archives. Tradition reports that the shepherd's name was Giatgen Dietegen de Marmels and that in order to confirm his statement, Ziteil was shone in the shining light that evening.

Building history
A modest chapel was probably built in Ziteil shortly after the second apparition in 1580. A church is mentioned for the first time in 1679 when the pastor Johann Gaudenz Janett had the old altar replaced by a new one. In 1710 it is reported that the church was rededicated.
Today's house of worship dates from 1846–1849. In 1914 and 1949, the pilgrims' house was expanded. In 1959 the church was rebuilt and in 1977 another storey was added.

The Capuchin Father Alexander Lozza and his pilgrimage from Ziteil
From 1919 to 1936, the Grisons Capuchin monk Alexander Lozza (1880–1953) was custodian of Ziteil. Lozza looked after the village of Salouf as a pastor , and traditionally this also included the office of custodian of Ziteil. Lozza was very connected to the pilgrimage site and liked to go hunting from here, as photos from his estate show. An anthology of poems written over the years is entitled Ziteil. Lozza also wrote a pilgrimage play that premiered in 1933: L'appariziung da Nossadonna da Ziteil / The apparition of the Madonna of Ziteil.
Pilgrimage days
Ziteil church and pilgrim house are open from Saturday lunchtime and on Sundays in the summer months of July, August and September - until the beginning of August also until Monday lunchtime.
