The pilgrimage church Maria Schutz on the Kronberg in Bad Griesbach im Rottal is a Roman Catholic church. It belongs to the parish " To the Holy Family " Bad Griesbach in the deanery of Pocking ( Diocese of Passau ) and was included in the list of architectural monuments in Bavaria under No. D-2-75-124-14 .

history

At the site of today's church on the Kronberg, northeast above the town center of Bad Griesbach, a linden tree was planted in the second half of the 17th century to replace an old oak that had been knocked down by the storm, and a picture of Mary was attached to it. When answers to prayer and healings were reported, more and more people made pilgrimages to the place not far from the road to Vilshofen . In 1686 the first wooden chapel was built from the donations of the pilgrims and furnished with pictures. A grateful pilgrim gave the chapel a copy of the miraculous image "Maria Schutz", which had been venerated in the Passau Benedictine monastery in Niedernburg since the middle of the 16th century . The name of the chapel was derived from this.

One after the other there were several chapels on the Kronberg, mostly simple buildings made of wood. The current stone building was started in 1847 and solemnly consecrated on May 1, 1852 . The holy Capuchin brother Konrad , born in 1818 in the nearby Parzham, regularly attended church services.

The church was renovated several times in the following years and partly changed. In 1966 the original vault collapsed and the donated altarpiece was lost. During a thorough renovation carried out from 1983 to 1985, attempts were made to restore the church to its documented original state to a large extent. Services are held there regularly to this day.

Construction and equipment

Maria Schutz zu Kronberg is a neo-Gothic church both in the exterior and in the interior . A roof turret is placed over the south-western facade facing the town center of Bad Griesbach with the entrance portal .

The interior of the hall church is characterized by a harmonious ribbed vault and a delicate painting with roses and lilies. The bright, light atmosphere of the church is also determined by the glass paintings in the choir windows. The left shows the instruments of Christ's Passion ( Arma Christi ), the right the Marian symbols of the Lauretan litany . The neo-Gothic altarpiece , crowned by filigree wooden pegs , contains a statue of the Queen of Heaven, Mary, with her child Jesus, flanked by her parents Joachim and Anna .

On the walls of the nave there are numerous votive tablets from grateful pilgrims, on the southwest wall hangs a large crucifix , to the right and left of which there are statues of Mary and the apostle John ( Jn 21,26  EU ). The organ on the gallery has eight registers , playable on a manual and pedal .
