It is dedicated to the fourteen Holy Helpers . The building in neo-Gothic style was completed in 1895.

history

Today's fourteen helper chapel in Mainz-Gonsenheim goes back to a previous building from 1729. All that is known about the earlier church is that the citizens of Gonsenheim are said to have built it in fulfillment of a vow . Today's chapel was built in 1894/95 on behalf of the Mainz Cathedral Building Office . It is under monument protection , the responsible Catholic parish Sankt Stephan established a foundation for the preservation of the chapel in October 2003 . The Nothelfer pilgrimage is connected with the construction of the church , probably the most important pilgrimage within the city limits of Mainz. It is celebrated on the third Sunday after Pentecost. On this day the members of the two Catholic parishes of Gonsenheim, St. Stephan and St. Petrus Canisius, march in procession to the pilgrimage chapel, where the high mass takes place at the outside altar.

architecture

The fourteen helper chapel corresponds to the taste of its time, it represents a typical example of the architecture of historicism . The hall church , built of clinker brick and sandstone , is in the neo-Gothic style. It is crowned by a slate roof and a small bell tower . In the structure of the high altar are the statues of the 14 helpers in need.

The chapel is on the edge of Mainz-Gonsenheim am Lennebergwald, at the end of Kapellenstrasse (Kapellenstrasse 46). To the south of the chapel are the remains of a path of the Seven Footfalls . The two Wendelinus chapels of Budenheim are located near the Fourteen Helpers Chapel, already in Budenheim territory .
