The local Catholic Church of St. Stephan in Mainz-Gonsenheim was first mentioned in a document in 1401 . With several new buildings and renovations, most recently in 1906, the church was given its current imposing shape in the neo-Gothic style with the nave over 62 meters long and the two church towers almost 60 meters high. Since it was the largest country church in Rheinhessen , St. Stephan was soon referred to as the "Rheinhessendom".

The associated rectory, a five-axis plastered building, was built until 1914 according to plans by Ludwig Becker . The modern leaded glass windows by the glass artist Heinz Hindorf were used between 1964 and 1967.

In 2006 the parish church of St. Stephan celebrated its 100th anniversary. The festive service took place on September 30, 2006, the anniversary of the inauguration, and was celebrated by the then Bishop of Mainz, Karl Cardinal Lehmann .
