Heinz Hindorf

Heinz Hindorf (born April 24, 1909 in Jena ; † August 21, 1990 in Michelstadt ) was a German painter and glass artist.

Life

Hindorf comes from a family of doctors and civil servants from Braunfels on his mother's side, and from a pastor's family based in the East Harz on his father's side . After graduating from high school in Schulpforta not far from Naumburg, he began studying Protestant theology and art history at the University of Berlin in 1928 , which he continued in Jena, Halle and Göttingen until he dropped out in 1932, and then lived for a time as a farm worker and amateur painter from 1934 to 1936 he studied painting under Magnus Zeller in Berlin and Rome. After further years in Italy, u. a. A stay in Olevano Romano in 1936/37 , he was one of Werner Peiner's master students from 1938 to 1940 at the Hermann Göring Master School for Painting in Kronenburg / Eifel. During the Second World War, Hindorf was a war painter in Russia, the Caucasus, the Ukraine and Italy, where he was taken prisoner by the Americans and remained there until 1946. As a freelance painter he lived from 1947 to 1950, first in Bad Sooden-Allendorf, then in Derschlag / Oberberg, in Ottersberg near Bremen and from 1953/54 in Michelstadt . In the Robert Münch glass workshop in Groß-Umstadt he learned the techniques of glass painting and the mosaic technique.

“Thanks in particular to his confident handling of traditional design elements, Hindorf was able to fit his work congenially into the overall conception of historical sacred buildings and thus meet artistic, theological and monument conservation requirements equally. The endeavor to find a design appropriate to the respective space and its function also determined Hindorf's work for contemporary buildings. Therein lies the fundamental unity of his work, despite all the diversity in the concrete design. "
