Marian apparitions

Statue and source of the Virgin of the Poor

The Beco family lived here in poor conditions. On March 25, 1921, the daughter Mariette was born. From January 15 to March 2, 1933, the twelve-year-old Virgin Mary is said to have appeared eight times, calling herself the “Virgin of the Poor”.

  • On January 15, 1933, the first day of publication, the mother and Mariette were waiting for their younger brother. Looking out of the window, Mariette saw a radiant lady in the darkness. The mother, who also saw a figure, sent Mariette to bed.
  • On January 18, Our Lady floated to a small spring on the side of the road and said, “This spring is reserved for me”. The father and a neighbor accompanied Mariette.
  • On January 19th, Mariette, accompanied by her father, prayed the rosary in front of her parents' house and received the following message from Our Lady: "I am the virgin of the poor".
  • On January 20, Mariette went outside the house with her father and prayed. This time, Our Lady asked for a chapel to be built.
  • On February 11th, Mariette received the following message from Our Lady at the source: "I come to alleviate the suffering."
  • On February 15, Mariette asked for a sign on behalf of a priest. Our Lady said: “Believe in me - and I will believe in you! Pray a lot! "
  • On February 20, Our Lady kept asking people to pray.
  • On March 2nd, the last day of apparition, Our Lady said: “I am the Mother of the Savior, the Mother of God. Pray a lot! Farewell! "

Thereupon the apparition chapel, the so-called "little chapel", was built and consecrated. This formed the basis for a place of pilgrimage. The Bishop of Liège , Louis-Joseph Kerkhofs , recognized the apparitions on August 22, 1949.

Mariette Beco died on December 2, 2011 at the age of 90 in the “Home de la Vierge des Pauvres” retirement home in Banneux, which is under the patronage of the Virgin of the Poor.

Banneux as a place of pilgrimage

Today, Banneux is a much visited pilgrimage site with a medicinal spring and the Hospitalité Banneux Notre-Dame with 360 beds, which is specially designed to accommodate sick and handicapped pilgrims. During the pilgrimage season from May to October, a blessing of the sick and several pilgrimage masses are held daily. The organization of the pilgrimage is carried out by the “GoE Banneux, la Vierge des Pauvres”.

In 1985 Pope John Paul II visited the place.
