The pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Kirchwald , a district of Nussdorf am Inn , was designed by the Aibling city architect Wolfgang Dientzenhofer (1678–1747) , who also counts the parish churches in Au bei Bad Aibling , in Flintsbach and in Götting among his works. The pilgrimage church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary has the specialty of being a pilgrimage site with a hermitage . From 2013 to 2016 it was inhabited by the hermit brother Clemens Wittmann OSB, who ran a candle making factory there. Politically, the Kirchwald belongs to Nussdorf, but it is also very closely connected to church life on the Samerberg .

history

Lüftlmalerei with an open shoe of the baby Jesus

In 1644 the pilgrim Michael Schöpfl returning from Rome built a hermitage in a rock cave below today's church. He brought a miraculous image and relics from Rome .

Michael Schöpfl was a journeyman cloth maker and originally a Protestant. He made a pilgrimage in 1643 during the Thirty Years' War from Iglau in Moravia to Rome and converted to Catholicism. On the way back he had to fear for his life because he had become a warrior, and in danger of death he promised that as a hermit he would serve God if he was saved.

According to a legend, he asked for a sign where he should build a chapel. When he came to what is now the Kirchwald forest on September 21, 1644, he saw the baby Jesus' shoe open on the image of grace. Then he knew that he could build the chapel here. A Lüftlmalerei on an old farmhouse in the Gritschen refers to this legend.

Schöpfl established himself as a hermit in the Kirchwald at the foot of the Heuberg near a spring. The spring was considered harmful to humans and animals, but when he poured consecrated water into it and placed his Roman relics in the water, Mary answered his prayers. The water even became medicinal, so that the sick came from all over the area and healed through the water.

A popular pilgrimage site soon developed. The current church was built in 1720 by Wolfgang Dientzenhofer from Aibling (not to be confused with Wolfgang Dientzenhofer from St. Margarethen). Today's furnishings were built in 1756 with three altars and a rococo-style pulpit . In the middle of the high altar is the miraculous image, a copy of Maria Schnee from Rome - a Byzantine icon - worked into a magnificent halo.

Votive tablets

Woman in front of the fountain

The pilgrims put up votive tablets as thanks for answered prayers . Many historical and new votive tablets cover the walls.

Votive picture woman in front of the fountain : The votive picture with the date "1793" shows a praying woman in front of the fountain, above the Mother of God with the child. Apparently a woman experienced relief or healing from the spring in Kirchwald in 1793 and this was expressed through this picture. The artist and the woman depicted are unknown. The picture originally hung in the pilgrimage church. It came back to Nussdorf via the art trade in 2011 and has been in private ownership ever since.

Way of the Cross

On the way from the parking lot in the Gritschen to the Kirchwald there are the 14 stations of the cross and on the way from Nussdorf to Kirchwald there are beautiful panels of the rosary secrets .
