The Church of the Annunciation ( Czech Kostel Tuřanské Matky Boží ) is a Baroque pilgrimage church of the Virgin Mary in the Tuřany district of Brno . The church is known for a 13th century wood carving of the Virgin Mary called Our Lady in Thorns . The church is the landmark of Tuřany and has been included in the list of Czech cultural heritage.
history
According to legend, the Slav apostles Cyril and Method brought a statue of the Virgin Mary with them to Moravia in the 9th century . This statue was discovered by a farmer in a thorn bush around 1050 and a chapel was built for it in Tuřany, which immediately became a place of pilgrimage.
A pilgrimage church was mentioned here for the first time in the 13th century in 1278. The place gained greater importance from the 17th century due to the activities of the Olomouc bishop Franz Seraph von Dietrichstein, who had the church expanded in 1610.
During the Thirty Years War the Swedes damaged the church and used it as a stable. The statue of the Virgin Mary was brought to Vienna in the meantime , but was then brought back to Tuřany in a solemn procession in 1642 . In 1693, a chapel dedicated to Saint Anne was added to the existing church .
The current baroque church was built in the years 1804–1806. The church received its current facade with the two striking towers and the mosaic of the Virgin Mary at the end of the 19th century . The old church bell from 1484 is in the south tower.
