The Catholic parish church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary is a listed church building in Eggerode , a district of Schöppingen in the Borken district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The former own church was probably separated from Schöppingen in the 12th century. It was first mentioned as a parish in 1313 . In the grace chapel next to the church, built around 1850 based on the model of the Kevelaer chapel , there is an approximately 800-year-old statue of the Virgin , which is visited and venerated annually by around 70,000 believers. Predecessor buildings of the chapel from the Middle Ages or 17th century (half-timbered) were destroyed in the Thirty Years War or demolished in the 1830s.

architecture

The west tower with a Gothic stepped gable was built in the 12th century. The choir , the first yoke of which is now structurally integrated into the nave, dates from 1739 and was gothicised at the beginning of the 20th century (pointed arch instead of rectangular windows), the nave was completely rebuilt in 1957 with three aisles (the old building had a single nave). The vault of the choir is bricked, while the nave was given a blue-painted wooden ceiling.
