The village of Eggerode is part of the municipality of Schöppingen in the Borken district and has around 800 inhabitants.

The river Vechte is emerging near Eggerode . According to a court decision, it arises (does not arise!) Through the confluence of the Rockeler Bach and Burloer Bach rivers. The Vecht flows through several places in Germany and flows into the Netherlands in the Zwarte Water .

Eggerode is surrounded by the Heven, Tinge and parish of Eggerode.

history

The place, first mentioned in 1151, is an important Marian shrine in the Münsterland . The medieval miraculous image of the Mother of God, which is shown in the pilgrimage chapel at the parish church of St. Mary's Birth , attracts around 60,000 pilgrims every year. The Byzantine-style figure was probably brought from Constantinople by crusaders from the area before 1230 and appears to date from the 12th century. The pilgrimage to Eggerode has been documented since around 1300, and in 1338 it was first documented by a papal indulgence . During this time Eggerode was one of the most famous Marian pilgrimage sites in Germany.
