The Rochus Church

The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church of St. Roch is located on a hill in the north of the village of Groß Döbern ( Dobrzeń Wielki ) in Upper Silesia , Poland and is a scrap wood church from the 17th century. Next to the Rochuskirche there is a cemetery and a memorial for the fallen. Around the church and the cemetery there is a brick wall with a brick gate and stations of the cross on the walls. There is a water source near the church, the St. Rochus spring.

The Rochuskirche was built in 1658. In 1687 a visitation report of the church was drawn up. In 1752 it was rebuilt. It was restored in 1928, 1958 and 2006. In 1945 Soviet soldiers set fire to the church several times, but residents of the parish were able to put out the fires in good time.

The church is surrounded by several corridors with arbor roofs.

Interior

  • Altars: The main altar in Baroque style dates from around 1700. In the middle of the altar there is a painting of Saint Roch of Montpellier . The side altars date from the second half of the 17th century and are also in the baroque style.
  • Pulpit: The baroque pulpit has sculptures of the four evangelists and is decorated with acanthus leaves . Above the pulpit there is a figure of Jesus on a globe surrounded by figures of angels.
