Sankt Salvator (Steinbachtal)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pilgrimage church of Sankt Salvator was near Rauenzell in the Steinbachwald (city of Herrieden , Middle Franconia ). The Steinbachwald near Rauenzell is home to the oldest former pilgrimage in the Eichstätt diocese .

history

In 1353 a small pilgrimage chapel was built in the Steinbachwald. More buildings followed over time and the pilgrimage flourished more and more, until secularization found its way into Bavaria in 1803 . From 1806 the church fell apart. Only a remnant of a fountain was visible evidence of former Christian life. After 195 years it was possible to restore or reconstruct the remains of the old church by founding a support association. On July 9th, 2002 the Friends of Saint Salvator eV was founded. In autumn 2002 archaeological excavations took place. Well-preserved remains of the foundations of the pilgrimage church and remains of walls from previous buildings were found, which could possibly have been built in a period before 1353. In 2003 the head of the well was reconstructed and the 23 meter deep well, which was filled when the church was demolished in 1807, was cleaned.

The complete outline can now be rediscovered in the forest scenery for the forest walker and preserved for the next centuries.
