Gerben "Germ" Hofma (born April 19, 1925 in Sittard ; † October 14, 2018 ) was a Dutch football player who was active for VV Heerenveen . The striker played twice for the Dutch national team .

Career

Hofma, born in the province of Limburg but the son of Frisian parents, already played in the first team of DIO Oosterwolde at the age of 15. From there he came to Heerenveen in 1945. As a left winger he played in the storm of the successful Heerenveen team around Abe Lenstra , who dominated the northern section of the Eerste class until 1951 and was northern champion nine times in a row. He was one of the players who made a legendary match on May 7, 1950 against Ajax Amsterdam from a 1: 5 deficit half an hour before the end of the game and a 6: 5 win. After this game, the fast winger was appointed to the Nederlands Elftal squad as the second Heerenveen player after Lenstra .

He had his first appearance in the storm alongside Lenstra, Kees Rijvers and the young Ajax player Rinus Michels in an unofficial international match on May 17, 1950 in front of 60,000 spectators in Amsterdam against a B selection of the English association , the Oranje through goals from Lenstra, André Roosenburg and Rijvers won 3-0. Then he went with the team on a friendly game trip to Scandinavia. In the two 1: 4 defeats, on June 8, 1950 in Stockholm against Sweden and three days later in Helsinki against Finland , Hofma, Michels and Cor Huijbregts made their first two official games in Oranje . While Michels was called up three more times and Hijbregts again, a knee injury brought Hofma's international career to an end. However, he played in the Heerenveen team until 1955. After a two-year break, he made another comeback as a semi-professional at his old club in 1957. However, he could no longer keep up with the young players and finally ended his career a little later. For VV Heerenveen he scored a total of 110 goals in eleven years.
