biography
Helga Paetzold was born on February 10, 1933 in Friedeberg. After the Second World War she had to flee with her parents Hildegard and Herbert Paetzold at the age of 13 because Silesia became Polish territory. From 1948 to 1952 she attended the Staatliche Handels-u. Rheydt trade school, arts and crafts department. Her journeyman's piece in 1952 was an embroidered map of Silesia, 120 × 160 cm. It shows the area in which she grew up. Paetzold won the award of the State Winner Handsticker Chamber of Crafts in North Rhine-Westphalia . This opened the way for her to study at the Werkkunstschule Düsseldorf (textile and weaving art department), which she attended from 1952 to 1954. From 1954 to 1955 she studied at the Jan van Eyck Academie Maastricht, tapestry department.
In 1955 she married the engineer Johannes Hubertus Ottenheym. He was head of the organic department at DSM in Geleen (Netherlands), a large chemical company. They moved to Sittard (Netherlands). They had four sons and a daughter. In 1978 Helga Paetzold became seriously ill, but later recovered. In 1979 she wanted a divorce.
From 1979 to 1980 she lived with her two youngest children in Maastricht , from 1980 in Begijnenhofstraat 7 in Sittard. She named this house Weefatelier Helga (Webatelier Helga). It was only in the last ten years of her life that she dealt with the terrible incidents of the escape in her carpets. Helga Paetzold became known for her impressive tapestries in monumental size. She wove more than 85 such large carpets, calculated from 100 cm width. She gave more than 70 exhibitions at home and abroad and enjoyed international fame.
In August 1990 Queen Beatrix visited Helga Paetzold's studio. The queen, who is very fond of modern art, and the artist talked to each other for a long time. Helga Paetzold saw this visit as a worthy recognition of her work.
On December 21, 1990, Helga Paetzold died after a short illness in her house in the Begijnenhofstraat . Her urn was buried in Leuscheid (Windeck) in the German Westerwald near her parents' grave.
In the last days of her life, Helga Paetzold founded the Stichting Collectie Helga Paetzold , which is supposed to manage her artistic heritage and make it known to other circles in order to keep it alive.
