Norbert Küpper (graphic designer)
Norbert Küpper (* in Düsseldorf ) is a German newspaper designer , graphic designer , typographer and reading researcher.
biography
Küpper initially trained as a typesetter and then studied visual communication at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences .
In 1984 he founded the office for newspaper design . He has redesigned more than 180 newspapers. He works mainly in the German-speaking area, but has also redesigned titles in the United Arab Emirates , Poland , the Czech Republic , Slovakia and Italy .
He was also invited to lectures and seminars at various universities as a guest speaker, including: Fontys School of Journalism , Tilburg , Netherlands ; Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), Cast degree course Audiovisual Media degree .
From 1981 to 2007 he was teaching newspaper design at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences.
In addition to his work as a newspaper designer, he researches reader behavior with a gaze- recording camera. Current results are documented in the book Newspaper Design and Reading Research , which was published in 2015. Six new designs by Küpper are documented in the book: VDI Nachrichten , Stuttgarter Nachrichten , GrenzEcho ( Eupen , Belgium ), Mindener Tageblatt , Wirtschaftszeitungen ( Austria ) and the specialist journal Produktion . The basis of the book is an overview of current gaze recording projects.
The book was also published in English: Newspaper Design and Reading Research .
Since 1998 Küpper has organized the European Newspaper Award , a European competition for the concept and design of newspapers. A yearbook (newspaper design) with the results was published for each year of the competition . The volume Zeitungsdesign 19 was released on DVD in March 2018 .
In 2003 he founded the European Newspaper Congress , which takes place in the coronation hall of the Aachen City Hall for the first four years and in the City Hall of Vienna for more than 10 years . At the 18th European Newspaper Congress in 2017 more than 500 journalists and publishing managers participated from 33 countries. The European Newspaper Congress is organized by Verlag Oberauer, Salzburg , in cooperation with Küpper.
Since 1989 he has been the author of a column on newspaper design in MediumMagazin .
In 2014 he was speaker at the 36th international congress of the SND - Society for Newsdesign - in Frankfurt am Main. His topic: "Europe's Creative Diversity in Print and Online".
In February 2018 he published an analysis of the new Lufthansa logo and corporate design on medium.com. He invited five logo design specialists from Denmark, Luxembourg, Brazil, Greece and the Netherlands.
He is also the author of numerous professional articles. In 2018 he published a newspaper review by eleven designers of the redesign of The Guardian .
