The Society for News Design ( SND ) is an international professional organization with over 2,600 members in 50 countries. It was on 22 May 1979 as a non-profit organization in Pennsylvania ( USA based). Headquarters is in Orlando in the US state of Florida . It is made up of editors, publishers, designers, consultants, infographics, art directors, photographers, layout artists, commercial artists, website designers, students and professors.

The SND's founding directors were Richard Curtis (The (Baltimore) News-American), Roger Fidler (Knight-Ridder Newspapers), Sara Giovanitti (The Boston Globe), Dave Gray (The Providence Journal), Robert Lockwood (The Allentown Call ) and Rolf Rehe (Herron School of Art). Rehe, the only German participant when it was founded, is an international media designer whose work has taken him to 32 countries on all continents. His redesigns primarily include daily newspapers in the USA, South America and many European countries. The name of the society was changed to Society of Newspaper Design in 1982 and again to Society for News Design in 1997 . Well-known members of the SND include Mario Garcia , a media designer who made a name for himself in Germany with the redesign of the Hamburg weekly newspaper “ Die Zeit ”.

The SND is organized in 19 regional sections in North America. In addition, there are various European sections: in Spanish-speaking countries (SNDlatina), in French-speaking countries (SND-FR), in Scandinavia (SND / Scandinavia), in Estonia (News Design / Estonia) and in German-speaking countries (SND-DACH ).

Society for News Design - Germany, Austria, Switzerland (SND DACH)

International SND Congress 2014 in Frankfurt am Main

From September 25 to 27, 2014 - less than two weeks before the Frankfurt Book Fair - the Society for News Design welcomes all participants of the 36th international News Design Congress in the rooms of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Frankfurt am Main and ends with the award ceremony “ World's Best-Designed Newspapers “on Saturday evening in a festive atmosphere.

Publications

Design: The quarterly magazine Design (in English) provides information on the latest trends in newspaper design and gives tips on technology, typography and design techniques.

Best of Newspaper Design: The yearbook "Best of Newspaper Design Competition" - in full color - presents around 150 newspapers from all over the world on almost 1000 images. The current 23rd edition of the yearbook - published on December 30, 2005 - comprises 272 pages ( ISBN 1-592-53169-5 ).

Design competition

Every year the SND organizes a design competition. It is carried out together with the SI Newhouse School of Public Communication (USA). The selection takes place every year in February. The awards are presented at the annual SND congress, which always takes place in autumn. German award winners were a.
