Wolf-Dieter Ring (born March 27, 1941 in Vienna ) is a German media politician. Until September 30, 2011 he was President of the Bavarian State Center for New Media (BLM) and Chairman of the Commission for the Protection of Young People in Media .

After studying law and completing his doctorate, Wolf-Dieter Ring was only outside of the Bavarian civil service for a short time. A. as personal assistant to Reinhold Vöth , director of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation . After moving to the State Chancellery, he played a decisive role in establishing a private radio and television landscape in Bavaria. As a representative of the state government, he set up the BLM established by the Media Trials and Development Act of 1984 as an institution under public law with its seat in Munich. The BLM began operations in 1985 with Wolf-Dieter Ring as Managing Director and Rudolf Mühlfenzl as President. From January 1990 to September 2011 the non-party Wolf-Dieter Ring was President of the BLM.

In 1993, Ring was appointed honorary professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

In the course of the allegations of fraud against the broadcaster 9Live , Ring came under public criticism because of its partly inconsistent decisions, which were heavily criticized by media experts.

Ring was also accused of having known of loans to the then chairman of the media council Klaus Kopka from media entrepreneur Ralph Burkei . Ring, who is said to have heard of the loan transactions from 1994 and 2000 in 2002/2003, issued several public statements on the transaction in 2009.

In September 2010 it was announced that Ring, as BLM President, was receiving a further 108,000 euros in royalties in addition to his base salary of 197,682 euros .

Ring was a board member of MedienCampus Bayern and from April 2010 to March 2013 was an expert member of the inquiry commission of the German Bundestag Internet and Digital Society . From April 2003 to September 2011 he was chairman of the Commission for Youth Media Protection (KJM).

Since December 2013 he has been a member of the Code Advisory Board of the German Association for Telecommunications and Media (DVTM).

He is Vice President of the Bavarian Academy for Advertising and Marketing (BAW) and head of the media marketing course at BAW. He was also President of the Bavarian Academy for Television and Digital Media (BAF) from 2017 to 2019 .
