Keystone is a winter sports resort ("Resort") in the Rocky Mountains. It is located in the US state of Colorado in the United States of America at 2,800 meters above sea level and belongs to the district of Summit County .
history
The area got its name in the late 19th century from migrating gold prospectors from Pennsylvania ("the Keystone State").
The actual resort was built in relatively untouched nature by the founder Max Dercum in 1967 and opened in 1970 . The current operator is Vail Resorts , which also owns other winter sports resorts in Colorado ( Vail , Breckenridge and Beaver Creek ). It therefore does not have a historically grown town center, but is actually a pure holiday complex with the typical service facilities, a hotel and various apartment complexes ("condominiums"). There is also a well-known conference center here.
Since the place can be reached quickly from Denver via Highway I-70 , it also serves as a local recreation area.
The locality of Keystone has the status of a “ census-designated place ”.
