The fourteenth season of the German singing casting show Deutschland sucht den Superstar was broadcast on the RTL television program from January 4, 2017 . Shirin David , who replaced Vanessa Mai , was a new member of the jury . As in the previous year, the motto was “No Limits”, so musicians could take part in the casting without age or style restrictions. The season winner was Alphonso Williams .
Rule changes
During the recall phase, which this time took place in Dubai , new casting candidates appeared. In addition, the appearances of the groups in the recall were now handled like those of casting candidates: each group had to select the golden CD of a juror before the appearance. Immediately after the performance, the jurors individually rated the members of the group and voted on their progress; in the event of a 2: 2, the vote of the judge whose gold CD was selected counted twice. In the previous seasons, the jury met again after all appearances in a round, decided together which candidates were eliminated and announced this in front of all candidates.

5th round
The 5th round of the Dubai recall was broadcast on April 1st. After the appearances, the final decision - also for the candidates - was postponed for the first time to the evening of the first motto show on April 8th. Only the candidates Viviana Milioti, Chamelle Moser and Giuseppe Riggio had previously been eliminated because of their performance, which was rated as insufficient for a live show. Ultimately, RTL announced the day before that Benjamin Timon Donndorf, Alphonso Williams and Andrea Renzullo would no longer participate. While Renzullo's participation had to be canceled due to the unsuccessful termination of a previous management contract, the unsubstantiated resignation of Williams, who had always received a “yes” from every juror during the broadcast, met with great rejection and shitstorms from viewers on social networks .
The top 13 candidates who were allowed to appear in the motto shows were Matthias Bonrath, Sandro Brehorst, Mihaela Cataj, Duygu Goenel, Alexander Jahnke, Ivanildo Kembel, Ruben Mateo, Armando Sarowny, Noah Schärer, Monique Simon, Angelika Ewa Turo, Maria Voskania and Chanelle Wyrsch.

Candidates
Of the last 16 candidates, 13 were selected for the theme shows starting April 8th. After the departure of Benjamin Timon Donndorf and especially Alphonso Williams in the run-up to the first motto show caused violent protests by fans against RTL, DSDS awarded a wildcard one day before the start of the second motto show and with it the possibility that one of the two last left Candidates were able to qualify for the live shows: In a 24-hour online voting on the official website, Alphonso Williams was voted into the top 11 with 91 percent of the votes.
