Up Where We Belong is a 1982 pop song written by Buffy Sainte-Marie and Jack Nitzsche . The text is from Will Jennings . The first interpretation was by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes .

Chart successes

In the US , the song ranked # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and held that position for three weeks. In the UK , Up Where We Belong reached # 7 on the 1983 annual chart.

Awards

Up Where We Belong received an Oscar in 1983 for best movie song (in An Officer and a Gentleman ) . However, the award only went to Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Will Jennings. The two performers were not awarded. The song also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes also received the 1983 Grammy Award for best performance by a duo or group with vocals in the Pop category.

Cover versions

The Lufthansa used for some years the song in their advertising, but with the refrain We lift you up where you belong .
