Cancer (music)
A musical cancer or cancer transition is the reverse playing a note passage (the levels of the vertical). Musical crabs are particularly popular in dodecaphony and in the Baroque , for example in the canon ( cancer canon ) and the fugue .
Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg gives the following definition in his treatise on the fugue (1754):
"If a composition is such that it can be performed not only from beginning to end, but also from end to beginning, that is, backwards: it is called a reversing contrapunct ."
The name is derived from the type of locomotion used by the crabs , which are often mistakenly said to only walk backwards.
If a cancer is also a reversal , it is called cancer reversal or cancer of reversal ( mirror cancer canon ).
