Patos ( Albanian also Patosi ) is a small town in central Albania . The place, which belongs to the Qark Fier , has 15,397 inhabitants (2011 census). Patos is about ten kilometers southeast of the city of Fier, a little off the route to Ballsh and southern Albania in the transition area between the Myzeqe plain and the Mallakastra mountains in southern Albania.

The place experienced a boom as an industrial city - during the Second World War , the city, which is now one of the 20 largest in the country, was just a small village. In 1927 there were 341 Muslim residents.

Patos is the center of the Albanian oil production . The decline of the industrial sector in Albania after the end of communism in the 1990s led to numerous social problems in the city. The whole region also suffers from environmental pollution from industrial waste. The national energy company of Albania, Albpetrol , is based in Patos. Many new oil wells have been developed northeast of the city. A Canadian company has been drilling for oil in the region since 2004. The reserves of the oil fields in the region are estimated at 202 million barrels, making it the largest onshore storage facility in Europe.

The city has a large cinema with around 600 seats, a culture house with a theater and public baths, a city library and a museum. The local soccer team is called KS Albpetrol Patos and is currently playing in the categoria e dytë .

The town ( bashkia ) has also included the surrounding former municipalities of Ruzhdija (east; 2326 inhabitants) and Zharrës (northeast; 5236 inhabitants) since 2015. The new municipality has 22,959 inhabitants (as of 2011).

Not far from Patos is the old Illyrian settlement of Margëlliç .
